Applied Music Program
Members of the RCC Wind
Ensemble are eligible to enroll in the applied music program at
Riverside Community College. This three - unit class entitles each
student to nine hours of private instruction each semester by a member

| Pamela Vliek Martchev Flute
Flutist Pamela Vliek Martchev was born in Merrick, NY, and received her initial musical education in the public school system of Long Island. From age 13 on she went to Manhattan School of Music for the Pre-College Division and then her Bachelor of Music Degree. Her teachers included Harold Jones, Kathleen Nester, and Linda Chesis. During her time in NY she won prizes in many competitions, was a featured artist on WQXR’s Young Artist Showcase, and played at many venues such as Carnegie Hall, the United Nations, and the White House for President Clinton. After her schooling she went on to perform extensively in Europe as 2nd flute of Philharmonie der Nationen under conductor Justus Frantz. Since moving to California in 2000, Ms. Martchev has played with the Riverside, Redlands, Pasadena, San Diego Chamber and San Diego Symphonies, and will play with the Los Angeles Philharmonic this March. She is principal flute of Mladi Chamber Orchestra and the Boulder Philharmonic in Colorado, and is the resident flutist on the Jacaranda Music Series in Santa Monica. She has played with the hip-hop orchestra Dakah, in concerts of Project Accidental and Dilijan, and can be heard on many soundtracks and albums, including Billy Child’s 2006 Grammy winning CD “Lyric.” She taught at Mt. San Antonio College and is currently on the faculties of Riverside Community College and San Diego State University. She is married to bassoonist Valentin Martchev.

| Rong-Huey Liu Oboe
Taiwanese Oboist, Rong-Huey Liu, received bachelor and master degrees from Manhattan School of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts Degree with Pi Kappa Lambda from USC. Her main teachers included Rong-Yi Liu, Joseph Robinson and David Weiss. As an experienced solo recitalist and chamber musician, Rong-Huey also serves as the principal oboist of Asia America Symphony, Riverside Philharmonic and substitute oboist for the Fresno Philharmonic, New West Symphony, Pasadena Symphony, San Diego Symphony, LA Opera and LA Phil. Rong-Huey can be heard on recordings with Calico Winds, David Benoit, Bright Eyes, Ron Isley, to name a few. Rong-Huey is on faculty at the Riverside Community College and La Sierra University. She resides in the desert with her husband Steven Schmidt and baby girl Autumn.

| Donald Foster |

| Donald Foster, clarinet
Donald T. Foster is one of Southern California’s most active clarinetists, serving as Principal Clarinetist of both the Pasadena and Santa Barbara Symphonies. He is a frequent auxiliary/substitute musician with the San Diego Symphony and the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra and is the Founding Artistic Director of Mládí, LA’ s first conductorless chamber orchestra. In addition, Don is very active in the motion picture and television studios, and can be heard on many soundtracks for feature films.
Don graduated from the University of Southern California, receiving his Master of Music degree in 1996 while in the studios of Yehuda Gilad and Michele Zukovsky.
He has received Fellowships from both the Tanglewood and Aspen Music Festivals, the latter of which he attended for four consecutive summers.
Don is a former first prize winner of the Pasadena Instrumental Competition, and has won concerto competitions with such organizations as the Los Angeles Mozart Festival, YMF Debut Orchestra, Marrowstone Music Festival, and Aspen Music Festival.
Prior engagements include serving as Principal Clarinet with the Philharmonie der Nationen based in Hamburg, Germany. While with the Philharmonie he performed in over 250 concerts in virtually every major city in Europe. He has also served as Principal Clarinet of the Colorado Music Festival, in Boulder, Colorado and has been featured in Central America with his reed trio Trianche as a featured ensemble for the Costa Rica Music Festival.
He is currently on the faculty of the Moreno Valley campus at Riverside Community College.
Don divides his time with residences in Palm Springs and the Silver Lake area of Los Angeles.

| Paul Klintworth Horn
Paul enjoys a diverse musical career in Los Angeles, and is fortunate to have performed with many of the top ensembles in Los Angeles and Orange counties. Ensembles of note include the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Los Angeles Opera Orchestra, Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and the Pacific Symphony. He is also active in the theater circuit, performing in shows for the Ahmanson, Kodak, and Freud Theaters, as well as at the Orange County Performing Arts Center. In addition, Paul has recorded for numerous albums and motion-picture soundtracks, and is a member of the locally based Modern Brass Quintet. Paul holds a Bachelor of Music degree from USC and is on the faculty of Riverside Community College. Much gratitude to his beautiful wife Takako, and his biggest fans, Phil and Kathy.

| Steven Schmidt Percussion
STEVEN SCHMIDT (b. 1964) was born and raised in Riverside, California. He began studying percussion at California State University, Fullerton under the tutelage of Todd Miller. After receiving a Bachelor of Music in Percussion Performance from CSU, Fullerton, Steven went on to earn a Master of Music in Percussion Performance from the University of Southern California, studying percussion with Erik Forrester and composition with Stephen Hartke and Frederick Lesemann. Steven has received commissions for compositions from Riverside Community College; the University of California, Riverside Department of Theater; the California State University Fullerton Clarinet Ensemble; the Irvine Valley College Wind Ensemble; Etiwanda, Los Osos, Canyon Springs and Valley View High Schools and the University of Southern California Theater Department (1994 production of Bertold Brecht's Caucasian Chalk Circle.) His wind ensemble composition Spin has been performed by Riverside City College, the California Music Academy, the University of Northern Arizona, Washington State University and numerous high schools. His recent works Southern California Portrait for wind ensemble, Contrast/Contradiction and Helios for jazz band were premiered by the RCC Performing Arts Department. His latest work, Shape Shifter, was commissioned by the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association for the 2008 All-Southern Junior High School Honor Band.
Mr. Schmidt's performances include a recording of Edgar Varese' Ionisation with the Ensemble Modern (a recording produced by Frank Zappa) and the soundtrack to Mr. Holland's Opus starring Richard Dreyfuss. Steven has also performed with the Orange County Pacific Symphony, the Capistrano Valley Symphony, the Southwest Chamber Symphony, Costa Mesa Civic Light Opera, Downey CLO, Fullerton CLO, Performance Riverside and South Bay CLO. Additionally, Steven has participated in many independently contracted performances with artists such as Peabo Bryson, Peter Cetera, Ray Charles, Petula Clark, Shirley Jones, Bernadette Peters, Don Rickles, Doc Severinson and Dionne Warwick.
In addition to his performance activities, Steven is busy teaching private students and writing marching band arrangements (clients include Riverside Community College, Ayala High School, Centennial High School, Corona High School, Cypress High School, El Dorado High School, La Sierra High School, Magnolia High School, Redlands High School, Rubidoux High School, Valley View High School, West Covina High School, West [Torrance] High School and Whittier High School.) Steven has taught and at Cal State University Fullerton, Irvine Valley College, College of the Desert and Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts. Currently Steven teaches full time at Riverside City College and is on the faculty of the University of Southern California Riverside.
Mr. Schmidt is currently completing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at USC in percussion performance with a secondary emphasis in music history, conducting and composition.
